Even if you do not have 8 or 9 a.m. classes, waking up early can be a highly productive and beneficial way to start your day. Another way to be smart with your time is incorporating a regular morning routine into your day. This includes waking up at the same time every morning, and getting a nutritious, filling breakfast, before embarking on your day. This is easier said than done, especially for chronic snoozers, but hitting the snooze button is highly detrimental to sleep quality. When your alarm goes off, the sound signals to your brain that it is time to wake up. When you hit snooze and go right back to sleep, it tricks your brain into thinking it is time to rest again.
When you wake up five, ten, or even fifteen minutes later, your brain will feel foggier than if you had simply gotten up the first time your alarm sounded. Set your alarm for the same time every day and go to sleep at the same time every night so that your body can get used to waking up at a consistent time, and resting for the same amount of time every night. Eventually, it will feel natural, and you will feel tired enough to go to bed early, and get eight hours of sleep each night.
Just like your study environment while you are at Bible college, your sleep environment has an effect on your sleep quality. If your bedroom is disruptive or uncomfortable, your sleep schedule will suffer, and you will be even more miserable getting up in the morning.
Set yourself up for sleep success by using a few affordable accessories that encourage a good night’s rest. Chamomile tea, lavender essential oils, a sleep noise app (ocean sounds, anyone?), or a new comfy bed pillow are all good amenities that can enhance your sleep. While exercise might not be everyone’s favorite activity, it can be extremely helpful in waking up your body and mind. It also kick-starts your metabolism, and makes you feel productive from the jump in the morning. You do not have to run a marathon, but even a brisk 30-minute walk or simple yoga class will do the trick.
Working out in the morning sets up your entire day for productivity. Even if you are more of an evening exerciser, think of how much free time you will have at night if you knock it out in the morning.
This might seem simple, but many students put off going to bed in order to hang out with friends or family, catch up on the most recent episodes of a show, or finish studying. The truth is that, no matter what you are doing, once you are tired, you will be much less effective and attentive in your studies.
Whether it is 7 or 10:30 p.m., listen to your body when it sends sleep signals. Training yourself to know when you need to sleep will allow you to reach a better level of sleep success. You will feel more rested in the morning when your alarm sounds.
