Office of Religious & Spiritual Life

We are devoted to the spiritual needs of students, faculty, staff and alumni through our chapel services, campus chaplains and student groups.

The Office of Religious & Spiritual Life strives to:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for religious and spiritual life at Arkansas Baptist College (ABC).
  • Provide pastoral care for students, faculty, and staff; as well as referral to resources within and beyond ABC which can assist them.
  • Work with the Religious & Spiritual Life Council to offer small groups, retreats, workshops, and conferences.
  • Partner with student groups, churches, and affiliated organizations to offer local and global mission trips.

About Rev. Saafir

Rev. I. Malik Saafir is Dean of Chapel. Before coming to Arkansas Baptist College, he served on the pastoral leadership team at Theressa Hoover United Methodist Memorial Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. Under his leadership, he founded the Dr. William H. Robinson Jr. School of Practical Theology to train clergy and laity called to outreach ministries.

Malik received a Masters of Divinity from Vanderbilt University where he was a Kelly Miller Smith Scholar and graduated with Honors. He currently serves on the GreenFaith Board of Directors and UALR William H. Bowen School of Law Racial Disparities Research Project Steering Committee.

About Rev. Palmer

Rev. Palmer serves as the Director of Religious & Spiritual Life, and Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Religious Studies. He is the Youth Pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist Church (Little Rock, AR), and Site Director of Unto Others Inc.

Rev. Palmer is a proud alumnus of Arkansas Baptist College, and deeply believes in the value of Higher Education. In 2010 he received his B.A. in Religious Studies graduating Summa Cum Laude. In 2016 he received his Master of Divinity from Memphis Theological Seminary, once again graduating Summa Cum Laude. His educational journey thus far has included the completion of graduate studies from the University of Arkansas Little Rock (School of Social Work) in the area of Marriage and Family Therapy; the completion of Level I/II of the Clinical Pastoral Education Program through Baptist Health Medical Center Little Rock (An affiliate of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education Inc.); and an immersion study in the Elements & Essentials of Expository Preaching at West Africa Theological Seminary (Lagos, Nigeria).

His greatest honor besides being a Child of God is being married to Janay L. Palmer; they are the proud parents of Nathanael A. Palmer II., Gabrielle Marie Palmer, and Josiah Ray Palmer.
