Follow these tips on how to use the resources provided to you as a college student at ABC!

What is your goal after you finish college? While there are many possible career paths after graduating from an HBCU, the goal is probably to start your career. Have you thought about the steps you will need to take to get a job? Not to worry. Our career services center is here to help.

Finishing your college degree is an important first step. But there are a lot of additional steps that we do not often think about. When should you start writing a resume? No matter how far you are in your college career, the time to start preparing is now.

Among the many benefits of the HBCU experience is the career services center that shows you how to get a job after college. The career services center can help you prepare for all the steps you will need to take when you are looking for a job.

Pre-Job Preparation

One of the best ways to get ready for a full-time job is to begin getting work experience now. The career center can connect you to on-campus jobs that you can work during the semester around your regular class schedule.

In addition to on-campus jobs, the career center can help you find an internship in your field of study. The career center connects students with people in the community and can help make this relationship work for you.

Networking opportunities are always important when you are thinking about a job. There is a common saying, “It is not what you know, it is who you know.” The reason that still gets repeated is we are more seriously considered for a job if we know someone connected to it. The career center provides networking opportunities that can help you now and years in the future.

Job Search Preparation

Before you begin your job search, there are several items you need to have prepared. First, you need a strong resume that showcases your skills. You also need a solid cover letter that can be tailored to the job. It is also a good idea to brush up on your interviewing skills.

The career center can help you. They offer templates to help you with your resume, and you can meet with a career counselor to review your resume and cover letter. They will offer you tips on making what you have work for the position that you want.

Career counselors will also help you with interviewing skills so you can feel confident and prepared. The career center also offers a career clothing closet to help you get your interview outfit ready.

Finding the Job

With all that preparation in place, you are ready to find your job, and career services helps with that too.

With the career center you can  participate in job fairs, where many employers come looking to recruit new employees. The career center also offers access to job boards, and you can sign up for a daily job-alert email that will show you the latest job postings for you.
